Kitchen Update

In May we did a little update in the kitchen. Kendall had done a trade with our neighbor: new Corian counters in exchange for some electrical work. Today was the day for this exciting change.  This is the before of our old laminate counters. They really didn't bother me at all, but these new counters are definitely an upgrade.

They are a pretty medium gray. We also got this big sink and a new faucet. I absolutely love the big sink without the divider. We also really like this faucet from Costco.

Before and After of the Kitchen

Our kitchen has been a work in progress.  It's finally to a point where I don't see all the things that need to be done to finish it off...there's just counters and backsplash left, but that will be in a while.  (***Luckily I took these pictures a few days ago, because if you came to my house today you'd see that it looks like a bomb went off in it!)
We just took the cupboard doors off these two cabinets and now have open storage.  I'm really liking having them open...plus we keep it neater.
Now for the biggest change we've made this year.......drum roll please......
Tada!  We got new appliances.  Although I love the 70's, we finally said goodbye to our faithful fridge and oven.  The fridge had started to leak a gallon of water at a time, so we said hello to this little...BIG...beauty.
I'm absolutely loving having the freezer on the bottom.  Now all the things we use daily are at eye level...love it!  But let's be honest, anything with a light in it would have been an improvement.
We are seriously some of the luckiest...BLESSED...KIND OF GHETTO....people.  We were given this gas convection oven from some friends of my mom.  They were getting double ovens and decided to gift it to us.  We're ghetto because we take whatever we can get...sometimes it's really nice ovens, sometimes it's falling apart/needs repairs items.  Oh well, you win some you lose some!  This time we definitely won!  I absolutely love having a gas range again, and I'm adjusting and learning to love the convection oven, luckily it can be a normal oven too.

Don't you love the cord running out of my calendar.  That's one thing about older homes I don't love...where all the plugs and phone cords are.  Oh well.  I posted this because I found this super cute chore chart that I loved and wanted to make my own version.  Sam and Maggie wrote the names on the spots and we wrote chores on the clothes pins.  Then after the week is up we rotate all the chores.  It's great, and super cheap!  I really love that the kids are responsible to clip it over when they get their stuff done...less nagging by me the better!

Oh the lovely before.  I can't believe I walked into this kitchen and could imagine it as anything other than ugly!

Finished Master Bedroom and some Spring Crafts

Well, I've finally taken pictures of our nearly finished bedroom redo.  We purchased our home 4 years ago in July...it had a mod podge of items in there because I didn't know exactly what I wanted or when I figured it out, the money needed to go elsewhere.  For my birthday this year we got it all put together.  YAY!  We inherited my mom's king size bed when she moved into her condo and didn't have a head board...hated not having a head board!  So Kendall and I built this cushy headboard.  It was a little more time consuming than I thought it would be, but I really love the way it turned out.
I found our quilt at Target, when they had their big bedding sale.  I really like it...I would have wanted to buy an Anthropolgie quilt, but with a $200 savings, I couldn't pass up the more kid friendly quilt.  SOMEDAY!  The picture wall is still a work in progress that I' hoping to have done this week.

I love this new lamp shade from Target, and it matched our old lamp bases that I sprayed bright green.
These are also the same side tables we had, I just painted them blue.

So that's it...what do you think?

This last weekend was my sister weekend craft party.  We made these really cute bird cages.  My sisters are pretty much geniuses, and come up with ways to make the cutest stuff.  I'm so glad I can reap all the benefits!

Laura molded these cute little owls and we painted them and put them in frames.
This is my new spring wreath I made...don't mind the stupid face I'm making.  I really love the huge succulent...Tai Pan has a huge selection of succulents btw.  This picture is kind of washed out; the colors are really bright and springy, plus it's a huge wreath...I usually would buy an 18" form and I think this is a 24" form.

The last of the celebrating!

On Sunday we celebrated the twins' 3rd birthday with lots of family.  It was kind of a crazy day so their cakes got pushed to the last minute...which meant they didn't have time to cool properly...which meant the layers were sliding all over the place.  Oh well, at least they tasted good!  They were loving being the center of attention, and they sure are lucky to have so many people who love them!  They really loved showing off their underpants & potty skills; since they are now potty trained.  Thanks grandma Thomson for the two packs on unders...they were much needed! Guess what finally did the trick for getting them to seriously potty train...diapers weren't an option, and they got to pick a two pack of starburst every time they went potty.  If they didn't want to go...or wouldn't in Joshy's case...I ate the pack in front of them.  Really mean, I know, but it only took twice for him to get it together!

On Monday night, Maggie picked playing Parcheesy for FHE.  I couldn't get over this funny kid.  He'd roll the dice and make his moves then put his hands up on his face while waiting for his next turn.

Time for some change

I'm not gonna lie, I'm always a little sad when it's time to take down the summer stuff and put up Halloween, then Fall.  This year I didn't even get the Halloween stuff out until a week into October...that's really late for me!  Then, I didn't even take a picture of my Halloween mantle.  Oh well!  So this was my mantle for summer time.
I was getting tired of having the oval mirror up and I really wanted to do a chalk board drawing for each season.  So I decided to take a frame I had kicking around and turn it into a chalkboard.  I just spray painted the frame, then spray painted the glass with chalkboard paint.  Super easy and a great change for my mantle.  (FYI...if you make a chalkboard, make sure you color on the whole thing with the side of the chalk before you draw anything on there, or you will forever have the first drawing stuck on there!)
I think it may end up being one of my favorite things! What's your favorite Fall decoration?

A Tutorial for a New Summer Wreath

Okay, so I finally got around to making my summer wreath...I still had my Christmas one up...don't judge, it wasn't super Christmassy...just red!

Step one:  Gather all of your supplies.  If you are anything like me I have two big bins full of fabric, buttons, and tons of other supplies. If you're not like me, then you will have to do a little shopping.  You will want to decide on the color scheme you want to have.  I went with a turquoise/aqua, red, coral and a touch of orange. You'll then want to pick out your fabric.  I like to mix textures in my wreaths...so I have cotton, felt, lace, & jersey.  Then you want to also pick out some store made green filler {I used a clover greenery} and some little flowers {mine are orange}.  I also used two stems of raspberries, but you don't necessarily need those.

Supplies:

- A wreath form.  I picked the grapevine wreath for this one, but you can also use other forms and just wrap them in fabric first, then in the yarn.
- A variety of fabrics in the colors you choose.
- Filler from the store...greenery, and little flowers to add depth.
- Yarn to wrap around the side of your wreath.
- Lace, ribbon and tulle for filler.
- Buttons to add to the centers of your flowers.
- Glue gun and lots of glue sticks.

In getting started, I like to have all thesupplies I may use out so I can see them together.  I like to be a little messy, so if this isn't how you work, have a clean little pile of supplies!

 Step 1: Starting from the back, secure your yarn with some glue, then wrap half of the wreath. After you get to the end point wrap it back over the section, giving it an x pattern.  {I used Martha Stewart's wool yarn in Aqua.}
Step 2: Start making flowers.  I really love this type of flower.  Starting with a good size square of material {I used a cotton material, folded in half for thickness, but I really like it done with felt folded in half},  you are going to sew petals.  Start in the middle, then work your way across, then all around to make a sunflower type flower.
This is how it will look when it's all sewn.
Then take sharp scissors and cut out the excess fabric.
Now for the center...start with a stip of fabric 1" wide by about 12" long.
Do a running stitch on the side so you can gather it in.
As you gather the material, it will start to curl...go ahead and run glue along the back to secure the flower. Then just glue it to the center of the sunflower.
Here is the finished flower.  {I don't add buttons to the centers until all the flowers are glued on the wreath.}
This next flower is super easy.  Take a strip of fabric that is 2 1/2" wide by 15" long.  Fold it in half and do a  running stitch along the raw edge.  As you pull the thread the fabric will start to curl.  Manipulate the fabric to curl the way you want and glue along the raw edge.
Both of these flowers were made this way.  So was the little red one on the top.  See how the different textures of material make a difference with the same technique?  The coral flower is made with a knit and the aqua one is made with a cotton broad clothe.
Maggie got to make her very own flowers!
She was so excited to use a needle and thread!
Step 3: After you've made several flowers, start attaching them to your wreath.  I like to start in the middle and work my way out on both sides.  Make sure you use a good amount of glue only in the center of each flower, that way you can add filler in behind the flowers.  Then once you get a few flowers glued on start adding in some filler.  One of the most important parts of making a wreath is using lots of layers...otherwise it will turn out looking really flat.
Keep adding more flowers and filler...keep going too, because I know it doesn't look like much at this point, but the more you add, the better it will start to look!
Step 4: Make more flowers.  For this flower you are going to need felt.  Use a strip that is 3" wide by about 24" long.  Fold it in half and glue the raw edges together.
Once the whole strip is glued together start cutting in notches on the folded edge...just be sure not to cut all the way to the raw edge.
Once the whole strip has the edges snipped, start rolling and glueing.
It's really full and super cute when it's done.
I like my wreaths to be pretty full so I add lots of filler in between the flowers.  For the ribbon, I just layered two different types of ribbon, a grosgrain and a glittery ribbon, on top of each other and glued them in.
Another filler is tulle.  Just layer that in behind the greenery and little flowers.
This is a good shot of all the filler layered together.
Step 5: Add your buttons to the centers of your flowers.  I really like shank buttons so there are no holes in the centers, but any cute ones will do!

Hopefully that helped.  They are a little time consuming, but totally worth it in the end!
Let me know if you have any questions and I will try to get back to you as soon as I can with an answer!

Some new, some re-arranged

Lately I have been in the sprucing up mood.  I have been wanting to polish the look in my home...you know? Does that mean you have to spend a lot of money???  Definitely not!  This first picture is of a grouping I have in my bedroom.  Love the new flower arrangement art work!  I had purchased that frame at the DI for $3.00.  It didn't have any glass so I went to hobby lobby and picked up a piece for $3.00 plus the matte for $2.50.  It's an 11 x 14 painting...so $8.50 is not too shabby for the size.
I have been wanting to update my kitchen for a while.  It was kind of a modge-podge of things I've collected over the years, but didn't really fit all together. The top two are just 11 x 14 prints I put into frames that I already had, and I spray painted them this avocado green to update them.  The marker board was on the other side of my fridge before.  Hopefully it will get more use where it's at now.
I ended up getting rid of a lot of my roosters and only kept my favorites...I am seriously having a yard sale this weekend at my house if anyone is interested...if yes, let me know and I will get you my address!!!  Everything on this shelf is either rearranged, or from somewhere else in my house.  It feels so much more like me now.  I think this wreath may be my favorite one I've ever made.
The next two pictures are in my kitchen too.  This one is 8 x 10.
This one is big. I just arranged the words the way I wanted them in adobe and did a poster size print at Costco.  I'm not a huge subway art fan, but I love everything this one says.
I realize that we may not have similar taste in decor, but what kinds of updates do you do in your home? Does anyone else get bored with their decor or is that just a weird Thomson trait???...I know most of my sisters arrange and re-arrange their homes too.
